T10 Canbus LED Bulbs: A Practical Guide for Interior and Clearance Lights

The T10 wedge bulb – also sold as W5W, 194, 168 or 501 – is the most widely used small bulb on a car. The same socket appears in interior dome lights, map lights, trunk lights, license plate lights, side markers and clearance lights. Because the socket is shared across so many positions, a single part number can serve an entire vehicle.

Reading the SMD numbers

T10 LED bulbs are usually described by chip count and chip size, for example 6SMD 2835, 18SMD 3014 or 3SMD 3030. The pattern matters more than the count:

  • Fewer, larger chips (3030, 2835) – brighter per chip and better for license plate and reverse lights where light has to travel.
  • More, smaller chips (3014, 1206) – wider spread, better for dome lights and panels where even illumination matters.
  • Chip count alone is not brightness – a 6-chip 3030 bulb can outperform an 18-chip 3014 bulb in a directional fitting.

CANBUS on a 5W circuit

Small bulbs draw very little current, so the monitoring threshold on these circuits is sensitive. A 1.5W LED in a circuit expecting 5W frequently triggers a warning on European cars. CANBUS T10 bulbs include a small load circuit in the base; they cost slightly more and run warmer, which is normal. On vehicles that do not monitor small bulbs, a plain non-CANBUS bulb is sufficient and runs cooler.

Polarity and flicker

Many T10 LEDs are polarity sensitive: if the bulb does not light, rotate it 180 degrees in the socket before assuming it is faulty. Residual glow or a faint flicker when the car is locked is usually the module’s diagnostic pulse rather than a defect, and a CANBUS version normally removes it.

Matching colour to position

  1. Interior and trunk – 6000K white is the usual choice; warmer 4000K versions look closer to factory incandescent light.
  2. License plate – white only in most markets; avoid blue-tinted versions that read as non-compliant.
  3. Side markers and turn signals – colour must match the lens: amber for indicators, red for rear markers.

Buying a small mixed pack is often the practical approach for a full interior refresh, since a single car can use three or four different lengths and chip layouts even though the socket is the same.
